86 imagesA few years ago in Pisa people complained that tourism was too concentrated around the universally known leaning tower. Especially the organized tours were a sort of hit and run: visit to the Piazza dei Miracoli, photo of the tower, selfie and souvenir photo miming holding it and then running away towards Florence, sixty kilometers away. Terre di Pisa, the local tourist promotion company, has made many efforts in recent years to extend the visitor's range of action, starting with the reactivation of the walkways along the ancient city walls, a way to see the tower and Piazza dei Miracoli from a higher point of view, but also to discover lesser-known corners of the city. But above all, living a city to be discovered on foot and in a relatively short time, even in just 36 hours, living it like the locals, "getting lost" among the alleys of the medieval centre, secret squares, historical monuments, important museums and local flavours, from street food to the restaurant where you can taste authentic Tuscan cuisine.

80 imagesIn Gorizia the state border is in the city center, for 57 years it was a real border, since the end of the Second World War also a border between two worlds, on one side Italy and on the other Yugoslavia, where Nova was born Gorica in the immediate post-war period. A "wall" much softer than the one in Berlin but still a wall, even if in reality it was a fence with barbed wire... Then everything became Europe and nowadays you cross the border as if you were going from one neighborhood to another of the two cities. Although outwardly very different, with a very different history, Nova Gorica and Gorizia are one place thanks to a secularized multi-ethnic culture. Even if the official title of Capital of Culture 2025 goes to Nova Gorica, the initiatives involve both cities and are based on the keyword "Borderless". A very full program of cultural events, including avant-garde ones, based on the culture of non-borders.

72 imagesThe Viareggio Carnival is one of the oldest in the world and holds the record of having created the parade of allegorical floats depicting characters and current issues treated with irony and unscrupulousness. It is the fixed appointment of the Tuscan coast in winter and it is a real show moving along the seafront of the Tuscan city. 51 imagesAfter years of neglect, the Liberty complex of the Terme del Corallo, also known as Acque della Salute, is slowly being reborn in Livorno. Despite the definitive closure, a collapse, decay and a garden that has become a forest over the decades, the structure retained the charm of the place of other times, markedly Belle Epoque, hidden and mysterious. Now with the Next Generation Eu it seems that there are the economic resources for that energetic restructuring that would insert them in a major tourist and cultural revitalization plan of the city. But above all it seems that there is a desire to include the whole area in the Uffizi diffusi project. The very famous Florentine museum would make the Terme del Corallo rise to the role of "Uffizi al mare" making it an exhibition venue for works of art from the Art Nouveau period until now kept in the museum's warehouses, inaccessible to the public. The times are not yet definable but teams of volunteers are working on the cleaning and maintenance of the Terme del Corallo, which has in fact become an asset of the city of Livorno.

The celebration starts with a parade of floats whose allegory is a clear reference to events and people of the year. The parades of children (el carnivalito) and colonies (dedicated to local traditions) follow. Pasto Carnival is made of pure creativity. Its a collective party where different kinds of parades come one after another such as the Calderon family's one (inspired by a weird event happened in the twenties) or the coreographic parade. The main events of the Carnival are sided by a collective and peaceful battle with spray soaps (the carioca), talcum powder, flour and black cosmetics. 44 imagesThe feast of the patron saint of Tarija, San Roque, in southern Bolivia is in their unique style on the national scene. In addition to the total absence of alcohol this party has no pre-Columbian roots. The "redskin", the main character of the party, does not have a face and represents the old leper who dress so as to recognize the signs of his illness was walking around town asking for charity. There is no character more appropriate than this to honor a saint who dedicated his life to healing the lepers. "The redskins" are many and give the party a touch of color and lightness indelible. This commemoration is lived so intensely and so recognized in Bolivia that has been proclaimed religious and cultural heritage of the whole nation.
