Born in Livorno in 1963, Federico Tovoli completed his studies when he qualified as an agricultural scientist at the ITAS in Pescia in 1982. Always a keen photographer, in 1984 he transformed his hobby into a profession. In the first few years he ran a photographic studio in his home city, dealing prevalently with industrial photography and serving private clients. Always a passionate traveller, hitch-hiking in the early years, after a trip to India his activity switched from static to dynamic. Alongside the production of photos of concerts for the local daily Il Tirreno, he began teaching photography at the ARCI social club in Livorno, and above all he began to collaborate with national travel magazines and on tourism columns in women’s magazines. From 1990 his photos began to appear in Tuttoturismo, Gente Viaggi, Quì Touring, Bell'Italia, Donna Moderna and many others. The theme of his photojournalism was always the travel itinerary, or the in-depth focus on a particular place. In 1993 he closed his studio and obtained his Press card as a journalist, since when he has travelled far and wide in Europe, has returned to India and visited the Far East. He has also published in foreign magazines such as Tours, Ecoute and Adesso (Germany) Altair and National Geographic viajes (Spain). From June 2004 until july 2008 he collaborate with the italian photo agency Nazca Pictures. Broked the relation with them he signed a contract with the spanish photo agency Contacto. Over the last five years his activity as a teacher of photography has also expanded to include other associations and secondary schools. The subjects of his reportages have changed and these are more focused on the social and geographical aspect, that of “telling the stories of people” and addressing topical themes in South America and Europe.
